Open Day Easter Sunday 8 April 2007

Passengers boarding Lincoln 89

Warm and sunny weather greeted our Easter Open Day for a second successive year, possibly losing us some visitors to the attractions of the coast and other events, although we recorded a marginal increase on last Easter's attendance.

However, around 400 visitors - including some from distant quarters of the country - made their way to Lincoln for the event, to enjoy the usual combination of visiting vehicles, sales stands, bus services, the chance to see our recent progress with restorations including the Albion lorry, and the United Bristol L, and of course to sample the wares of our ever popular catering stand.

The visiting vehicles included a selection of buses and coaches, including recently restored ex South Notts 114, Damiler Fleetline HNN 114V, making one of its first public appearances. A healthy variety of cars - including various Austins, a Railton - Straight Eight and a Volvo PV 544, was accompanied by a small selection of commercial vehicles, including an ex Trent AEC Matador (cunningly disguised with rather a lot of Bristol RE body parts) which was an unusual visitor.

The modern era was represented by a Volvo / Plaxton from Harpurs', Derby, and an Optare Tempo from Veolia Transport, Lincoln.

The usual 'bus services' operated from our 'terminus' opposite the Museum, with about 1,700 passenger departures being made on 84 bus departures through the day. Eighteen buses / coaches from eight different decades were 'in service', ranging from our 1920s petrol engined Leylands to the latest thing in double deck buses - an Alexander-Dennis Enviro 400, making its first passenger carrying appearance at our event, five days before entering service on the Lincoln - Grantham route (thanks to our friends at Stagecoach Lincolnshire for making this happen).

As well as many 'regular performers', Lincoln 89 returned to service after a while off the road, and was joined by similar (in body if not colour and chassis) Northampton 246 making its first visit to our events.

As ever, our thanks are due to everyone who came to the event, and to those who made it happen - our friends and neighbours at Lincoln Co-op Moorland Centre, Krystals, Anglo Steel, and Hillcroft Business Park for use of their premises; and to our members and friends who brought vehicles, and / or assisted before, during and after the event.

Our next Open Day is on Sunday 4 November 2007 - our traditional 'end of season' event, which has been increasing in size and attendance every year in recent memory.
