Annual Car Rally at Lincoln Castle

LVVS Castle Rally 2005 Castle Square, Lincoln with the Cathedral in the background

The Castle Rally was held on 11th June, a significant date for me, as it was my wedding anniversary. For those male readers who are not married, this is a date not to be trifled with, so it was with kind permission of my wife, Jan, that we went ahead with the event on that day. Luckily for me, a kind friend, the town crier, Terry Stubbins, having opened the rally, then publicly wished my lady a happy anniversary - many brownie points gained! Not only that, but those that came to the rally could not fail to notice that Jan's right hand was in plaster as the result of recent surgery. So we were lucky to have her with us at all on the day, and it was thanks to good friends, who offered their invaluable help at the booking in point, that we were able to go ahead.

The day was blessed with excellent weather - some said too hot - others basked in the sun and enjoyed the excellent venue. One hundred and eighty six vehicles arrived and were efficiently shown to their parking spots by our excellent marshals - not an easy job at the best of times. By 11.00 a.m. all vehicles were in position, and months of hard work could be seen in a variety of shapes, colours, types, makes and ages of vehicles.

Many regular entrants came to say hello, and we received numerous compliments from first time entrants on the tremendous team effort. This year again saw a growth in classic vehicles and such a range - from a Lambretta scooter to a collection of Volkswagen caravanettes! Larry Riches always brings an interesting variety of vehicles and this year was no exception. A special one for me was the Railton Straight 8, a vehicle I had never seen before.

Our local DVLA and the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership attended and were used well during the day. This event, as usual, was an opportunity to showcase our Transport Museum to the many visitors.

Thanks go to our sponsors, Marshalls of Sutton on Trent and Witham Oil and Paint Ltd of Lincoln, Thanks also to Peter Allen of The Castle, without whose permission and support the rally would not be held in such perfect surroundings, and not forgetting his staff, in particular, Malcolm, for his support on the day. Thanks also to our Town Crier Terry Stubbins and his Lady Trish, who managed to smile throughout the day despite the obvious weight and discomfort of their magnificent costumes on what must have been one of the hottest days of the summer. To all of the LVVS volunteers who helped Jan and I on the day to make it a success - you know who you are - a big THANK YOU!
Brian and Jan Harding
