Photo of the Month

We are gradually digitising our collection of photographs, and making them visible to the public via the internet.

Each month, two photographs will be shown on this page, and these (and others) will be included at larger size on our 'Flickr' page. (Clicking on a photo will take you straight to a larger version.)

NEW (March 2012) - we are now adding archive documents as well.

MAY 2012
JXN344 109CLT

This month's photographs are of two ex London Transport buses with independent operators in Lincolnshire.

Hornsby Coaches (Scunthorpe) JXN 344 (former London Transport RTL 23), Leyland PD2 / Park Royal had been new to London Transport in 1948, entering service at West Green (WG) garage.

Withdrawn in the major service cuts of 1958, it was one of many that passed to smaller operators around the country, and is seen here operating to Ashby, probably on the 'joint service' which connected Scunthorpe with Ashby every 10 minutes, Hornsby and was one of Lincolnshire Road Car's few jointly operated services.

JXN 344 appears to be operating here in London Transport livery with the fleet name painted over. It later received Hornsby's own livery, and continued with the company until 1966 when it was sent for scrap.

A later generation saw many of London Transport's Routemaster class being withdrawn in the mid 1980s, and being used to reintroduce conductor operation around the time of deregulation.

Pulfreys' Coaches 109 CLT (former London Transport RM 1109) was new to London Transport in May 1962, entering service at Hounslow (AV) Garage as part of the final stage of the trolleybus withdrawal programme.

Itself withdrawn in 1987, 109 CLT passed to Pulfreys' Coaches of Grantham, and was used for about six months on a service between the town centre and Alma Park, also largely still in London Transport livery. It is seen here laying over at Grantham Bus Station.

It later passed to Rotherham & District, where it ran until 1991, and also had loan spells at Poole Bay Services, Dorset and Black Prince of Morley. It is believed to survive in non PSV use.

Our archive documents of the month are two timetable leaflets -

one the orginal 1924 timetable of C Barker, Mablethorpe (today Grayscroft Coaches, still owned by the Barker family, and still operating between Mablethorpe and Louth.)

The other is a timetable for the "Rover Saloon Coach Service" from Grantham to London. This timetable appears to date from the 1920s-30s, but any more information about the operator would be appreciated.
APRIL 2012
FW2228 Leyland Titan TD1 BBE946 Leyland Titan TD7

Lincolnshire's Leyland buses are the theme of this month's photographs.

Lincolnshire's association with Bristol / ECW buses only began in 1944, after the Company had passed to the Tilling Group, Leyland buses being the main purchase of the 1930s.

The company's first double deck buses were three Leyland bodied Leyland TD1 Titans, purchased in May 1931. Number 187 (FW 2228) was the first of the batch.

The three received new Willowbrook 'utility' double deck bodies in 1943, and remained in passenger service until 1954, by that time re-numbered 1601-3.

No. 187 is seen at Drummond Road Bus Station, Skegness, on service 57 to Boston, a route still operated by Stagecoach Lincolnshire, today as 'InterConnect 7'. The amber lamp, fitted to aid the identification of Company buses after dark, is just visible above the destination box.

Lincolnshire Road Car's last bs to 'pre war' standard, Leyland bodied Leyland Titan TD7 LT 585 (BBE 946) was delivered in May 1940, apparently in full pre-war livery of lined out dark green, light green stripes, and off-white roof and window surrounds.

The light roof, being highly visible to enemy aircraft, was an early casualty of the war years. Headlamp masking and white edging to the mud-guards followed to assist visibility in blackout conditions.

No. 585 was later re-numbered 1613, and ran in service until 1958.

The date and location of this photograph are unknown, but probably taken before the bus entered service.
Our archive document of the month is the LRC 'vehicle disposition list' (showing vehicle allocations by depot) for April 1972 - here
